ID: Q180227

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Word 97 as the e-mail editor in Microsoft Outlook 98 and you use the Internet Mail service, messages formatted with certain fonts may appear as a series of question marks.

RESOLUTION

This only occurs when you are using WordMail. To switch to the Outlook e-mail editor rather than WordMail, follow these steps:

1. On the Tools menu, click Options, then click the Mail Format tab.

2. In the "Send in this message format" list, click to select Microsoft

Exchange Rich Text instead of Microsoft Word, and click OK.

When you compose new messages in Outlook, you can use the same font and the message will display correctly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 98. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
