You can set Outlook so that it automatically enters a +1 in the Phone Number field as you enter new local and long-distance telephone numbers. This provides added functionality, including:

Under most circumstances, you should not disable the country code. If you experience problems related to this, you can disable the feature.

To disable the addition of the country code in new telephone numbers, follow these steps:
  1. Click to select a Contact.

  2. On the Actions menu, point to Call Contact, and then click New Call.

  3. Click Dialing Options, click to clear the check box for "Automatically add country code to local phone numbers."

  4. Click OK and Close.

When you add a new telephone number to a Contact, Outlook will not add the +1 prefix.

NOTE: The above method affects all telephone numbers, including fax numbers.
